English Exam Skills
(Teens and Adults)
(Teens and Adults)
The course is built around the requirements of the learner's chosen examination. Preparation covers the examination format, task types, assessment criteria, timing and strategies, alongside the underlying English required to perform at the target level.
Learners become familiar with exactly what their examination requires. Learners practise each part of the examination systematically before progressing to complete examination papers.
Practice is based on the specific reading tasks in the target examination. Learners develop strategies for:
locating information efficiently
identifying main ideas and detail
understanding meaning in context
recognising opinions, attitudes and purpose
interpreting implied meaning
dealing with distractors
managing reading time
Learners practise the writing tasks required by their examination, including:
understanding the task and identifying what the question requires
planning before writing and organising ideas
developing appropriate content
using the required register and style
meeting word limits
checking and improving responses against assessment criteria
Learners practise the specific listening formats used in their examination, working on:
predicting possible answers
identifying key information
recognising speakers' opinions and attitudes
following changes in topic or direction
dealing with distractors
managing answers within the available time
For examinations with a speaking component, learners practise the required tasks and interaction, which may include:
individual responses, describing and comparing
expressing and developing opinions
discussion and collaborative tasks
responding to and extending answers with an examiner or another candidate
Where included in the examination, learners practise the specific language tasks required, such as grammar and vocabulary, cloze tasks, word formation, transformations, sentence completion and paraphrasing. Practice focuses on recognising the task type, applying an appropriate strategy and producing an accurate answer.
"Let's be honest: based on my years of experience teaching English, no course can guarantee a specific result. As tutors, we simply cannot know exactly what a test will look like, no matter how carefully we prepare our students. What we can do is provide the right strategies, targeted practice, and the best possible preparation for whatever you may encounter on the day. I also don't believe in "fast-track" preparation routes. If it were realistically possible to achieve a reliable result in a matter of days, all those carefully designed textbooks and long-term preparation programmes would be unnecessary. People could simply study with AI for a week at home and walk away with a certificate. It simply doesn't work like that. Real progress takes time, consistent practice, and a proper understanding of the language."

The course follows the structure and demands of the target examination.
Classroom practice may include:
individual examination tasks and timed sections
examination-style exercises and guided analysis of answers
writing under examination conditions
speaking assessments
listening and reading practice
error analysis and strategy practice
complete examination papers and mock examinations
Learners receive regular feedback on their performance and identify specific areas requiring further preparation. Practice becomes increasingly independent and examination-like as the test date approaches.

Teaching is based on the format, task types and assessment requirements of the chosen examination.
Time is spent on the examination tasks and language areas where the learner needs further development.
Learners practise working within the time limits of the actual examination.
Performance is reviewed systematically so that errors and weaknesses can be identified and addressed.
Full or partial mock examinations provide practice under examination conditions and help learners become familiar with the complete examination process.
As an independent Club with no ties to any publishing house, we're free to evaluate materials purely on their educational merit and choose what best suits each learner's age, level and goals. Every textbook used at the Club is carefully reviewed by Tutor Martin before it's introduced to students. At the same time, we welcome titles that bring fresh, innovative approaches and offer genuine value in supporting teaching and learning.
We use textbooks from Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Pearson, Macmillan Education and National Geographic Learning.
The English Exam Skills programme is for learners who have a specific examination or test as their primary goal.
It's suitable for learners who need to:
prepare for a particular international examination
understand exactly what the examination requires
become familiar with all task types
improve performance in specific examination sections
develop examination strategies and practise under time limits
receive detailed feedback on examination tasks
complete mock examinations before the test
