Speaking Skills
(Teens and Adults)
(Teens and Adults)
Build the confidence and communication skills you need to speak English more naturally, clearly and comfortably.
Speaking Skills is designed for learners who understand English but find speaking difficult. You may know the grammar and vocabulary, but hesitate when you have to speak. You may be shy, afraid of making mistakes, unsure what to say, or simply need much more practice using English aloud.
This course gives you what you need most: time and space to speak.
The focus is simple — you speak, you practise, you try again, and you gradually become more confident.
Become more comfortable speaking English without constantly worrying about mistakes, pronunciation or what other people think.
Learn to express yourself without translating every sentence in your head. Keep speaking even when you do not know the perfect word.
Practise talking about yourself, your interests, experiences, opinions, plans, relationships and everyday situations.
Improve pronunciation, rhythm, stress and intonation so you communicate more clearly and feel more confident.
Explain what you think, give reasons, agree and disagree, ask questions, respond to others and keep conversations going.
Develop practical tools for moments when you get stuck: asking for clarification, finding another way to say something, buying time and continuing the conversation.
The first step is becoming comfortable with speaking. You practise regularly, take risks, make mistakes and continue without stopping every time something is not perfect.
Vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation develop through speaking. New language is used immediately in conversation rather than studied separately and hoped for later.
You practise listening and responding, asking follow-up questions, showing interest, clarifying meaning and keeping conversations going.
The teacher provides the language, questions, activities and support — but you do the speaking. Some activities are short and spontaneous. Others allow you to develop an idea, tell a story or speak for longer.
Mistakes are expected. You do not need to wait until your English is perfect before you start speaking. Speaking is part of how your English becomes better.
Note
For more about the principles behind our approach to English language teaching, see our article Six Principles for Effective English Language Teaching.
Many learners are not silent because they have nothing to say. They are silent because they are afraid of saying it in English.
You may worry about making grammatical mistakes, forgetting words, pronouncing something incorrectly, speaking too slowly, being corrected, sounding foolish or not knowing what to say.
This course creates a supportive environment where mistakes are treated as a normal part of learning. The aim is not to speak perfect English from the beginning. The aim is to be willing to speak.
With regular practice, speaking becomes less stressful, more automatic and more natural.
As an independent Club with no ties to any publishing house, we're free to evaluate materials purely on their educational merit and choose what best suits each learner's age, level and goals. Every textbook used at the Club is carefully reviewed by Tutor Martin before it's introduced to students. At the same time, we welcome titles that bring fresh, innovative approaches and offer genuine value in supporting teaching and learning.
We use textbooks from Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Pearson, Macmillan Education and National Geographic Learning.
Speaking Skills is particularly suitable for learners who:
understand English but struggle to speak
are shy or lack confidence
are afraid of making mistakes
translate from their first language before speaking
know vocabulary but cannot use it easily in conversation
freeze when someone asks them a question
speak very briefly and want to develop longer answers
want to become more spontaneous
need regular speaking practice
want to feel more comfortable using English in everyday life
You do not need to be a confident speaker to join. You join to become one.
