English for Young Learners

Children learn languages best when they are interested, involved and encouraged to use what they learn. English for Young Learners gives children a strong foundation in English through stories, discussion, creative activities and topics that encourage them to explore the world around them. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are woven together from the first lesson.

Each learner follows a pathway based on their age, current level, previous experience and progress.

A Complete English Learning Programme

The programme develops the language skills children need for school, everyday communication and future learning.

Speaking & Listening

Children learn to understand spoken English and communicate clearly. They practise everyday language, ask and answer questions, describe experiences and take part in conversations.

Reading & Writing

Reading develops from phonics and simple texts towards longer passages and independent reading. Writing progresses from words and sentences to connected texts, with regular practice in spelling and grammar.

Vocabulary & Grammar

Vocabulary grows through meaningful topics and regular use of new language. Grammar is introduced step by step and practised through speaking, reading and writing.

Pronunciation

Children listen carefully, practise sounds and learn to speak clearly from the beginning.

Communication & Confidence

Pair and group activities, discussion, storytelling and presentations give children regular chances to speak and participate.

Stories, characters and familiar situations help children remember new language and give them a context in which to hear and use it.

Practice & Repetition

New vocabulary and structures are revisited through different activities until they become familiar. Children build the habit of using them naturally.

Lessons include questions, games, reading, problem-solving and creative activities. Learners get regular chances to use English.

Curiosity & Discovery

As their language develops, children start using English to learn about the world: exploring topics, asking questions and connecting what they learn to their own experience.

Core Textbooks: Oxford Beehive & Oxford Discover 

Oxford Beehive provides the core language progression for most learners in the programme. It develops speaking, listening, reading and writing alongside vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, and supports children through the early and intermediate stages of English.

Oxford Discover is for learners ready for greater challenge. It takes an inquiry-based approach built around critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Children explore questions and topics through reading, discussion, investigation and presentation, working towards more demanding academic and communication tasks.

Together, the two courses form a pathway from core English skills towards greater independence. Material is chosen to match each learner's level, experience and progress.
